Facial Philosophy

Facial Philosophy

I don't focus on selling products. I often have an extra bottle of something I can sell you or order it for you. If I push anything it's education and good solid skin care practices. That means simple routines that are do-able even for a business owner mom. As far as products, I don't care how much or little it costs; it has to work and be safe. I look for what I call "clean" product formulations. I tend to shy away from aggressive treatments. Face massage is one of my main anti-aging treatments because it's non-invasive and it has so many benefits. It feels good too.

The Facial Products I Use

The Facial Products I Use

The primary product lines I'm currently using for facial treatments are Cellular Renewal Systems and Andalou Naturals.

Cellular Renewal Systems

Cellular Renewal Systems (CRS) is a professional esthetician line focusing on creating "clean" product formulations with natural and botanical ingredients. They focus on formulation not packaging.

Andalou Naturals

Andalou Naturals is relatively new product based on Fruit Stem Cells available in health food and herb stores. So far most of their products rate cleanly on EWG's Skin Deep Database. I'm keeping an eye on Andalou Naturals to be sure it doesn't degrade if big business gets hold of it. Check out each product individually on the Skin Deep Data Base as they give different ratings based on unique fragrance and formulation.

Avoid Sun Damage

Avoid Sun Damage

If I could tell you one thing in sunny New Mexico, it would be wear sunscreen all year! You should know I hate sunscreen too. I'm just super committed to having the best skin I can. The best sunscreens are formulated with zinc and titanium oxide with a tint so they look natural on your skin. After that, moisturize more than you think you need to, at least morning and night.

There is a lot of sun damage under the skin that can only be seen with a special UV facial lamp. Freckles are sun damage. Sun damage is happening whether you can see it or not.

Northern New Mexico has many wonderful strong, independent women that could care less about Hollywood beauty. These are rugged outdoors women: skiers, bikers, hikers, etc. Avoid nasty aggressive skin cancer treatments. It's never too late. Wear sunscreen!

After-Care for Skin Cancer Treatments

After-Care for Cancer Skin Treatments

If you have been to a dermatologist who has given you a skin pealing treatment removing cancer cells from your skin, I can help you with planning an after-care routine. Wait to come in until after your skin has healed over. Dermatologist pealing treatments come in varying strengths from mild to very aggressive. Things like Aloe gel and vitamin E oil can help with the after-care healing process.

Creating a simple, workable skin care program for yourself to avoid future damage is critical. Wearing sunscreen after a dermatologist peal procedure is essential because the skin has had its protective layers stripped away. If you do get a sun burn after a dermal peal, the burn will go deeper and do more damage because your skin is thinner and more delicate.

I have no affiliation with any of these companies. If in the future I am working with any specific companies I will let you know.

Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Data Base includes 72,000 products rated for both ingredients and overall safety including sunscreens, facial care products and cosmetics. This is my "go to" recourse. Check out the EWG parent site for more health info (food, home cleaning products, etc.). Check out their Sunscreen Report for articles.

Stacy Malkan's .org website for safer cosmetics, "Not Just a Pretty Face," is another recourse.

What the Cosmetic Industry Doesn't Want you to Know

What the Cosmetic Industry Doesn't Want You to Know

When I first got started as a facialist I read Paula Begoun's book, "Don't go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me."

It was a real eye opener.

Women spend in inordinate amount of time and money on beauty and skin care products. They don't all work and they aren't all safe. Just because a product is expensive doesn't mean anything. It turns out many products that are way too expensive for what they claim to do, are also made with toxic ingredients. Really!

I immediately looked up all my favorite cosmetics and face-care products. I was shocked as Paula bashed my favorites.

I had to re-evaluate my search criteria for what I call "clean" products. "Natural" and "Organic" products are sometimes too harsh and can cause skin reactions (like cloves or lime for example).

Paula also has written, "The Beauty Bible." She has some good common sense things to keep in mind if you are considering elective surgical procedures. No judgement here. I'm encouraging you to educate yourself by evaluating all your options, THEN choose what to do.
